Buteyko Questions & Answers by Sergey Altukhov

Senior Buteyko Methodist-Inspector 1990
Author of the "Doctor Buteyko's Discovery" trilogy.

How and why did Profesor Buteyko come up with the 60 seconds Control Pause?

Buteyko originally came up with 6.5 % CO2 for an absolutely healthy man (not the 60 seconds Control Pause).
Buteyko believed that an absolutely healthy man has 6.5%
of CO2 in the alveoli of the lungs. It is the main Buteyko postulate. Remember it all your life!

Buteyko measured CO2 in the alveoli of the lungs of his patients with the help of his famous combain-complexator.

From 1960 to 1968 he measured many patients and healthy men.
The measurements say:

an absolutely healthy man has 6.5% CO2 in the alveoli of his lungs.
3.7% CO2 : you may have asthma, hypertension, diabetes...
4.7% CO2 : your asthma will run from you in many cases.
5% CO2 : your hypertension will run from you in many cases.

The main factor of your health is the percentage of CO2 in the alveoli of your lungs! Remember it FOREVER!!
So say Holdain and Priestly. So say the measurements of Buteyko!! The percentage of CO2 is the main factor of your health. Not your CONTROL PAUSE!
The control pause is the SECONDARY finding of Buteyko! It is a very approximate thing.

Buteyko had his famous combain-complexator. This enabled him to measure the percentage of CO2 of his patients and to know the level of their health.
But his patients had no such combain in their homes. But they still wanted to know the percentage of CO2 in their alveoli...
Really wanted to know!
So Buteyko began to measure the percentage of CO2 (on the combain) and note the CONTROL pause at that level.
He made this table:
6.5% CO2 corresponds to a 60 seconds CONTROL PAUSE (APPROXIMATELY!! very approximately...)
3.7% CO2 corresponds to a 7 seconds CONTROL PAUSE (approximately).

The measurement of the control pause is a FORCED MEASUREMENT. It is not a strict index!!
The real index of your health is the average percentage of CO2 in the alveoli of the lungs (10 measurements taken over 24 hours).
Remember it!!
The control pause is only a simple (very, very approximate!) index for the average patient, who are unable to record strict measurements of CO2 on the combain 10 times over 24 hours... It is a forced approximate measurement!

What level of Control Pause did Professor Buteyko say a Buteyko Therapist should attain and consistently keep above?

Buteyko said: his methodists must have no less than 5% CO2 in the alveoli of their lungs. From 5% CO2 to 5.5% CO2 on average.

There were 80 methodists in the Buteyko Centre in 1988.
Buteyko gave examination to all of us by control pause.
He disharged 8 methodists who had control pauses lower than 40 sec.
But no one methodist had a control pause of 60 sec...

Striving for a control pause of 60 sec is not a good thing, I feel.
Such a difficult aim will take up a lot of your life power. You will be weakened. Such an aim will keep you under constant strain...
